  • Text: Applied Linear Algebra; the Decoupling Principle, by yours truly.  We will attempt to cover the first 8 chapters, with occasional sections skipped.  Note that MOST copies of the book on the used book market are defective, thanks to a printing error that took way too long to be caught.  Look at the figure on page 15.  If the bold face b's in the figure don't have subscripts, then most of the other figures in the book, especially in the later chapters, are also mangled.
  • Prerequisites: M340L or M341 or M311 or my permission.  I expect you to have a good feel for manipulating matrices, especially row reduction, but also taking determinants. I also expect you to have seen abstract vector spaces and linear transformations, but some rustiness is expected -- we'll be reviewing that.  I don't assume you've seen eigenvalues and eigenvectors at all; we'll do them from scratch.

  • <>*GRADES ARE IN!  The average score on the final exam was a 74, and the median was a 77.  Meanwhile, I computed your HW score by dropping your lowest 2 weeks, averaging the other 12, and rescaling to a total of 100.  Your term total was then MT1+MT2+HW+2*Final - Lowest.  The maximum possible was 400 points.  The cutoff for an A was 350 (87.5%), the cutoff for a B was 290 (72.5%), the cutoff for a C was 250 (62.5%) and the cutoff for a D was 200 (50%).  Of the 27 people who took the final, there were 7 As, 10 Bs, 7Cs, 2Ds, and one F.

    There weren't any borderline cases, which made my job a lot easier!  The highest B was a 337 (84.3%), the highest C was 277 (69.3%), the highest D was a 219 (54.7%) and the lone F was 167 (41.7%).

    Have a wonderful Christmas vacation!
